This piece features Muhammad Ali who in life was surrounded by his quick rhymes and quotes. Deciphered morse code above the subject reads "I am the greatest" which was universally his loudest statement.
Why did you choose this subject? Ali is universally known for his talent as a boxer, his personality, and representing a Black man free to be what he wanted to be. He is undeniably the sports figure of the 20th century that has a super human persona.
What influenced this artwork style? His words. You know his is a strong, opposing figure inside the ring; however, the time he spent in the ring doesn't compare to what he did outside of it. In that space, his mouth dominated over his fists. He was able to validate that he was the greatest verbally, physically, objectively, subjectively, and in every way possible. As I brainstormed how to make his words a part of his physical presence, I looked to an equalizer. Behind him are the sound levels from the barrage of quotes, chants, rhymes, and other soundbites that helped us all become mesmerized with this icon. I then used morse code to illustrate the loudest statement of them all at the top.
